the cow lottery and I tip my hat to Shirley Jackson

Standard

cowboys quickly come
cowering and covered
in a convenient sweat

cows stand huddled
befuddled bewildered
of the strange day that is

cowboys ready their horses
and from a black hat
draw a cows name

the cows quietly stand
stiller and stiller and stiller
hoping their name wasnt picked

as the cowboys
begin the round up
the cow lottery has begun

feast of the dead

Standard

the grass drinks the sun
and feeds on the rot
where our ancestors tread

the cows in the sun
they eat of the green
of the pasture they’re led

warm in the sun
and safe behind fences
tomorrow slaughtered instead

we laugh in the sun
and sit at the table
devour the flesh and the bread

As the sun strikes the mirror
deep in the halls
we sit at the feast of the dead

apocalyptic dreams

Standard
apocalyptic dreams

across the road the cows
safe and warm in their cow house
although they most all
dream of the apocalypse
some lay awake thinking
uneasy thoughts about a time
when they were free
how did they trade their freedom
for the safety of a fence and a barn
will they ever be free again
across the road I
wonder the same thing about us
laying awake to uneasy thoughts
only to fall asleep later
and dream of the apocalypse
